Mashup Websites
A Mashup Website. What is it right? Well, it pretty much explains itself. A mashup website does what it says; it mashes together data from two or more outside sources or websites to give the user a new set of data.
Mashup websites use APIs or, an application programming interface to gather information for other websites or applications. By gathering information from other applications, the mashup website can then actually do the “mashing” necessary to give the user of the website their requested information.
Quarkbase is an example of a mashup website that could be very useful. Quarkbase has a very simple set-up to it and it is easy to navigate. Simply, Quarkbase is a site that will take a website you are interested in and it will spew out a few statistics about that site. It will show you the main people behind that site, the traffic that site is generating and it will also show you it’s top competitors.
Along with giving you a general overview of the site you are looking in to, it also generates a section that is purely displaying online medias that are showing that website in its feeds. For example, when you search CNN.com in Quarkbase, it will show you people who are twittering about it, people who are blogging about it and it will give you the social popularity for the website through many different websites including digg.com and yahoo answers.
Another website that can be useful that is considered a mashup is Sharethis.com. This website is really useful because it takes all of your different accounts (i.e. - gmail, myspace, AIM etc.) and will “mash” them so to speak into one giant address book. From there you can send many friends or contacts the same information at the same time from different mediums online. Not only does it let you send to friends immediately but it also lets you save information in something called a “sharebox” to keep for later in case you want to do more research or collect more information before sending it to friends or colleagues.
Not only does ShareThis save all of your contacts in one place, but it also lets you manage all of your blogs and profiles from the same website. It is very helpful because instead of navigating from page to page, or having several browser windows open, you can be at one site and get it all done. This is revolutionizing because it can help people organize all of their accounts and thoughts much more concisely and accurately.
Twellow.com is a website that is not only a mashup itself, but the name is also a mashup. Twellow mixes the yellow pages with twitter. It is a free online site that allows users not only to put their own information on it, but you can also get other peoples information as well. This site is linked to Twitter and therefore has all the information and tweets of a Twitter user, yet it also has the beauty of the yellowpages.

Not only can they provide, quicker and more accurate searches and there for information for people, but they can also provide entertainment as well. There are plenty of mashup websites that have nothing to do with data, and information but are there for the user to enjoy them self while using it. The whole concept of mashable websites to be very appealing, taking information from many well-researched and known sites and putting them into one to provide the public with the most accurate and best known knowledge up to that point is a great tool.
